The family of the deceased revealed to Sowetan that a group of villagers accused her of witchcraft, linking her to the death of her relative in Majuba village. The deceased relative, 23-year-old Samkelo Manundu, was reportedly killed in Franschoek, Western Cape, through stabbing.

The mob subjected the 83-year-old woman to physical assault, burning, and forced drowning in a 150-litre drum. Following this horrific incident, a 38-year-old relative expressed their distress, stating, “After the incident, we no longer trust anyone as we have been getting threatening calls. I am struggling to sleep at night as I can still hear my grandmother screaming and begging for her life.”
