Message of Encouragement from Chukwumerije to Team Nigeria

Chika Chukwumerije, an Olympic Games medalist from Beijing 2008, has conveyed words of encouragement to Nigerian athletes who participated in the Paris 2024 Olympics. He emphasized that despite not securing any medals at the global sports event, they should not view themselves as failures.

Similar to what occurred at London 2012 and previous editions, Team Nigeria did not manage to clinch any medals at Paris 2024.

Chukwumerije praised the athletes as champions in their own right and advised them to redirect their focus towards upcoming opportunities, particularly the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

Reflecting on his experience as the team captain during the London 2012 Olympics, Chukwumerije extended his empathy to all the athletes at Paris 2024. Sending a message of reassurance, he expressed, “You have performed admirably. You are not ‘failures’. Remember, you hold titles as African Champions, Commonwealth Champions, and National Champions. By qualifying for the Olympics, you have set yourself apart in a world populated by billions of individuals.”

“Your loved ones – parents, friends, and colleagues – support you. Seek comfort in their presence during this time and swiftly overcome any feelings of disappointment.

“I am well aware of the numerous challenges you have encountered and will continue to face. You have managed to achieve the impossible and should be lauded as superheroes. Merely reaching the Olympic Games as a Nigerian athlete is an achievement worthy of receiving a personal Olympic gold medal for your dedication and sacrifices.”

Looking towards the upcoming editions in Los Angeles and Brisbane, he issued a call to action for the athletes.

“The Paris 2024 Olympics may be in the past, but the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympics lie ahead. I urge you to gaze forward. Your Olympic aspirations are still within reach. Do not let the past weigh you down. Stay focused on shaping a different future.”
