Member of Rivers State House of Assembly regains freedom after 14-day detention

After a two-week period of incarceration, Hon. Sokari Goodboy Sokari, the representative for Ahoada West Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, has been released.

The arrest took place outside the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on the 18th of April, 2024.

Alongside another PDP leader, Ezebunwo Itcemati, who is also loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Sokari was taken into custody by policemen, as revealed in a viral video where a woman made allegations.

While Itcemati was released shortly afterward, Sokari remained in police detention.

Confirmation of Hon. Goodboy’s release came from Jerry Omatsogunwa, the Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor on Electronic Media, during a phone conversation on Thursday afternoon.

Omatsogunwa criticized the police’s actions, stating that such arrests would not be acceptable in more advanced nations around the world.

He mentioned, “Hon. Sokari Goodboy Sokari has been released. He was freed today by the police in Abuja. As the Bible says, ‘weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.’ We need to enhance our policing practices in this country.”

Omatsogunwa emphasized that in modern societies, police would conclude their investigations before making any arrests.
