Meeting Scheduled Between IGP Egbetokun and Adegboruwa Regarding August 1 Protest

A meeting has been arranged in Abuja on Tuesday between the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa.

Last week, Adegboruwa wrote to the police chief requesting police protection for protesters associated with the Take It Back Movement.

In response to the lawyer’s letter dated July 29, 2024, the IGP has instructed senior police officers to address the request.

The communication from the police boss was conveyed in a letter signed by CP Johnson Adenola, his Principal Staff Officer.

The IGP has also sought a meeting with Adegboruwa in Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, to further discuss the request.

“…The Inspector General of Police wishes to meet with you at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, to engage in further discussions regarding your request,” stated CP Adenola.

Concerns have been raised by Nigerian security operatives against violent protests, citing a similar situation in Kenya.

Nigeria’s secret police have issued warnings about potential violent disruptions during upcoming demonstrations against economic challenges.

Organizers of the planned protest have expressed dissatisfaction with the escalating cost of living and economic hardships in Nigeria.

This has come amidst significant spikes in core and food inflation rates, reaching 34.19 percent and 40.87 percent, respectively.
