Meeting between IG and leaders of ‘Take It Back’ movement regarding upcoming hunger protest

On Tuesday, Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, engaged in a virtual discussion with key figures from the Take It Back Movement, which includes renowned lawyers Femi Falana (SAN) and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN).

As per a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the meeting focused on the group’s upcoming nationwide protest, with a primary objective of ensuring the safety of citizens while upholding their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

It was highlighted in the statement that Egbetokun stressed the significance of maintaining public order and safety amidst the protests. He acknowledged the group’s right to peaceful demonstrations and highlighted the Police Force’s duty to assist in exercising these rights within lawful limits.

“In line with this, the IGP has advised the Take It Back Movement, which has expressed intent to protest, to liaise with the respective State Police Commissioners for the coordinated planning of the protests to guarantee participant and public safety, as well as to tackle any potential security issues to ensure the peaceful progression of the protests,” the statement mentioned.

The IGP cautioned against impromptu open processions due to potential security threats.

The statement further added, “He emphasized that organizing and cooperating with the Police and other security agencies are vital measures to minimize risks, protect the rights of all citizens, and ensure the well-being of all involved.

“The Inspector-General of Police, reaffirming the commitment of the Force to safeguarding the rights of all citizens and ensuring that all public gatherings are conducted in a safe and secure manner, urges stakeholders to collaborate in establishing a peaceful and secure environment during the planned protests.”
