Mass Trial of Terrorism Suspects Resumes by the Nigerian Government

Confirmation has been received that the Nigerian government has resumed mass trials of terrorism suspects within the country.

On Wednesday, this was officially communicated by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Office of the National Security Adviser.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), had disclosed in December 2023 that the Federal Government successfully secured 366 convictions in the trial of Boko Haram terrorists carried out in 2017.

It was further mentioned that 896 suspects were released due to insufficient evidence, while 61 other cases were postponed for further proceedings.

Additionally, in December 2023, the Federal Government also achieved the conviction of four Boko Haram financiers.

In a statement made on Wednesday by Abu Michael, the Head of Strategic Communication at NCTC-ONSA, it was clarified that the trial will adhere to the standards of the international criminal justice system.

The statement also highlighted that approximately 300 suspects are currently undergoing trial, with five judges overseeing the five courts and chambers established to expedite the judicial process.

It was reiterated that the suspects are being legally represented by attorneys from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.
