Maryam Sanda wails, attempts to flee after court sentenced her to death by hanging for killing her husband (photos)

Maryam Sanda’s reaction was unexpected after the court sentenced her to death by hanging for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello. The FCT High Court in Maitama found her guilty of the killing on Monday, January 27, 2020, and thus convicted her of the charges.

Sanda had stabbed her husband, Bilyaminu, to death on November 19, 2017, following an allegation of infidelity after she saw a text message on his phone. The drama that ensued after the conviction led to Sanda attempting to flee the dock, but court and prison officials managed to drag her back.

Notably, the judge stood down the matter for five minutes to allow the commotion to settle. He then made a ruling that she should be remanded in Suleja prison until she exhausts her right of appeal. The judge emphasized the gravity of the offense for which she was convicted, based on Section 221 of the Penal Code.

Amidst the proceedings, Sanda kept wailing and shouting, and her family and lawyer attempted to console her. She was heard exclaiming, “I was fasting and praying … Ya Allah, why?” as court officials announced that the judge was about to return for sentencing.

Sanda’s mother and other sympathizers were visibly distressed as officials escorted her away from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja after the sentencing.

The intense emotional display in court was captured in photos showing Sanda’s distress, her family’s grief, and the aftermath of the ruling. The gravity of the situation was apparent in the reactions and expressions of those present.
