Manager: Mr Ibu Garnered More Acclaim in Ghana, South Africa, Kenya and Four Other Nations

According to Dominic Nwuzoru, the manager of the late Nollywood comedic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, the comedian was highly recognized in countries such as Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Gambia, Gabon, and Botswana during his lifetime.

He emphasized that Mr Ibu utilized humor as a tool to advocate for peace and solidarity across Africa, always displaying his love for Nigeria by proudly showcasing the Nigerian flag.

During an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Nwuzoru highlighted that the veteran comedian received numerous accolades and honors from leaders and communities across the African continent.

Recounting an incident in Ghana, Nwuzoru shared how Mr Ibu’s performance brought together two opposing tribes for the first time, leading to their reconciliation. As a result, Mr Ibu was bestowed with a Chieftaincy title as the ‘Malangula I of Tamale Land,’ symbolizing a peacemaker, while Nwuzoru was named the ‘Ngulala,’ signifying the peacemaker’s spokesman.

Aside from his impact in Ghana, Mr Ibu’s patriotism was evident during a visit to Botswana, where he proudly waved the Nigerian flag upon arrival, combating the negative perceptions associated with Nigeria at that time.

In summary, Nwuzoru described Mr Ibu as a unifying figure who brought joy and laughter to Africans, earning respect akin to that of a leader.

He further elaborated on Mr Ibu’s role as a cultural ambassador for Nollywood, using his talent and comedic skills to advocate for peace, happiness, and unity throughout the continent.

Nwuzoru reminisced on their close bond, which evolved from a professional relationship in 2004 to a lasting friendship, emphasizing Mr Ibu’s popularity transcending Nigeria’s borders.

Reflecting on Mr Ibu’s international acclaim, Nwuzoru emphasized how the late actor not only entertained fans worldwide but also portrayed Nigeria in a positive light, dispelling misconceptions about the country.

Mr Ibu’s authenticity and charisma endeared him to audiences globally, with Nwuzoru citing instances where even young children in Ghana were familiar with the actor’s work.

As a result of Mr Ibu’s influence, foreigners developed an affinity for Nigeria and expressed a desire to visit the country, drawn by the actor’s genuine representation of Nigerian culture.

Mr Ibu’s recent passing in Lagos marked the end of a remarkable career that began on October 17, 1961, in Nkanu West Local Government of Enugu State. He is best known for his renowned ‘Mr. Ibu series,’ which includes memorable titles such as Mr. Ibu (2004), Mr. Ibu 2 (2005), Mr. Ibu and His Son, Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, International Players, and Mr. Ibu in London (2005).
