David Kigoma Onguyi, a middle-aged man, has been brought to court for verbally abusing a female trader at Maasai Market in Kenya.

The porter-cum-menial worker faced charges for creating disturbance likely to cause a breach of peace after insulting a woman known as Nyaboke at the market where she operates a Maasai curio shop on January 5, 2020.

The dispute began when the suspect, who had taken a customer to Nyaboke’s shop on December 19, failed to provide her with the payment for goods worth Ksh500. Despite promising to settle the debt “later in the day,” all efforts to receive the money were unsuccessful, leading to the public humiliation of the trader.

During the altercation, Onguyi reportedly threatened to beat up Nyaboke and made derogatory remarks, including accusing her of being unclean and having torn underwear. He also made inappropriate comments about her personal hygiene habits.

Following his arrest after the incident was reported at KICC Police Station, Onguyi was released on a Ksh10,000 cash bail. He denied the charges when arraigned before Senior Resident Magistrate Mothoni Nzibe. The case has been adjourned till January 21, 2020.
