Man, 54, charged with assaulting Eko Disco employee

In Lagos, a 54-year-old man named Olajide Aro was brought before the court on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a worker of the Eko Electricity Distribution company.

The defendant faced charges at the Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, with Magistrate Patrick Nwaka presiding over the case. He was accused of assault, breach of peace, obstruction of duties, and causing physical harm.

According to the allegations, on the 18th of July 2024, the defendant attacked an Eko Electricity Distribution Company employee named Adeniyi Mathew while he was carrying out his lawful duties.

PUNCH Metro reports that Olajide, along with others in Ogbe Close, Iwaya, Lagos, allegedly conspired to prevent the EKEDC worker from disconnecting power to customers in debt.

During a verbal altercation, Olajide purportedly struck Adeniyi in the face, causing a laceration on his lips, tore his shirt, and pushed him.

Following a report to the Sabo Police Station, Olajide was apprehended and questioned. While at the police station, he admitted to assaulting the complainant, attributing his actions to a sudden escalation driven by malevolent forces.

Prosecutor Thomas Nurudeen informed the court that the incident occurred on July 18, 2024, in violation of Sections 411, 168(d), 116(1), and 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The prosecutor presented the complainant’s injury, statement, the torn shirt, and statements from the investigating officer as proof of the alleged offences.

The defendant did not enter a plea.

Nwaka set bail at N200,000 with two Lagos State resident sureties required.

Furthermore, the defendant was to be held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until meeting the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned till September 11, 2024.
