Authorities from the Ogun state Police Command have arrested a 29-year-old man named Kunle Abati for reportedly forcing sexual intercourse with a 27-year-old woman with Down syndrome (name withheld).
The incident occurred on the 7th of December 2022 and was reported to the Ilese ijebu divisional headquarters by the mother of the victim. She stated that after sending her daughter on an errand at around 7:30 am, the daughter returned with blood stains on her clothes. The victim revealed that the suspect had sexually assaulted her when questioned about the blood, leading to the arrest of Kunle Abati.
Following the report, the DPO Ilese Ijebu, CSP Paul Omiwole, dispatched detectives to apprehend the suspect, who was subsequently taken into custody. During questioning, the suspect admitted to the crime, mentioning that he took advantage of the victim’s health condition, only to discover that she was a virgin.
The victim, who was bleeding profusely, was promptly taken to General Hospital Ijebu ode for medical care. Confirming the arrest, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the spokesperson for the state police command, stated that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Anti Human Trafficking and Child Labour unit of the state Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.
