Renowned activist lawyer, Femi Falana, has condemned individuals waving the Russian flag and advocating for the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s government, labeling these actions as treasonous.
Falana cautioned the perpetrators against such behavior, emphasizing that displaying the Russian flag during protests amounted to a violation of constitutional rights.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Falana underscored that protesters have the right to demonstrate peacefully within the confines of the law.
He stated, “The right to protest must be exercised peacefully in accordance with the law.
“While we have supported the #endbadgovernance protesters’ rights, it is our patriotic obligation to urge them to distance themselves from anti-democratic factions exploiting peaceful protests to incite violence or advocate for a military coup in the country.
“It is crucial to highlight that endorsing a military coup or displaying the Russian flag, a nation known for backing unconstitutional regime changes in Africa, represents a clear infringement of the constitutional right to protest against the Nigerian government.
“Legitimate grievances about the challenges in the country should not be manipulated into a call for an unconstitutional change of government.
“Hence, those involved in promoting another military regime unlawfully should cease these activities immediately. Otherwise, they risk being charged with treasonable felony under section 41 of the Criminal Code Act.”
