Lavaud’s Inspiration from Her Father’s Love for Fela’s Songs
How dad inspired my career with Fela’s songs — Lavaud

A London, United Kingdom-based singer, Estelle Lavaud, has attributed her introduction to music to her father, who played the songs of the late afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, and other musicians from an early age.

Reflecting on the root of her music career, Lavaud, a British-Mauritian, shared with Sunday Scoop, “My dad introduced me to Fela Kuti’s music when I was in primary school. I loved the way his music made everyone feel liberated and warm.

“It always made me want to dance. I also remember loving the way his guitar was ‘funky’, and the percussion and brass would compliment it. His music had such a wholesome and authentic vibe.

“I started singing from the age of six, and I performed in competitions all over the UK. My mother also helped me to develop my talents. I feel so blessed.”

She expressed her excitement about featuring Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, and Patoranking on her latest single, Roll on Me, explaining that she had always wanted to work with them as she had been their fan since they began making music.

When asked about other artists she would like to collaborate with, Lavaud mentioned her desire to work with Wizkid, Tems, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy. She considered Wizkid a legend and shared an anecdote about him appreciating a sample of his song, True Love, which she performed with her ukulele and posted on Instagram.
