Launch of Rivers health insurance scheme by Fubara

A new milestone was reached as Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara introduced the state’s Contributory Health Insurance Scheme. This initiative aims to provide households with financial protection against healthcare costs and address disparities in service provision.

During the launch, Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of impartiality in managing the scheme to ensure that the most vulnerable members of society can access healthcare services.

Setting an example, the governor enrolled as the first participant in the scheme, followed by his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. He stressed the need for the scheme to promote inclusive and fair healthcare access for all residents of the state.

This information was disclosed in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Monday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, and distributed to the media.

It is worth noting that the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme Bill was signed into law on June 21, 2021, but remained unimplemented until Fubara revived the program. This allowed residents and individuals in the state interested in health insurance to take part in the scheme.

After inaugurating the Comprehensive Primary Health Centre in Ndoni Town, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, Fubara stated, “The commencement of the Health Insurance Programme in our state has been validated by the progress witnessed here. It aims to enhance healthcare accessibility for the populace.

“Through this, families unable to afford costly healthcare services beyond their means can benefit from this newly introduced service.

“However, it is essential to ensure that the integrity of the scheme is upheld. The services should be efficiently utilized, and funds allocated should be managed judiciously to achieve the desired objectives.”

Acting Executive Secretary of the scheme, Dr. Vetty Agala, highlighted that the scheme will increase the likelihood of achieving universal healthcare access in the state.

Agala remarked, “Today marks the commencement of scheme enrollment. Your Excellency, we express gratitude for approving the implementation of the Rivers State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme.

“Now, residents of Rivers can access healthcare without paying upfront. At our facilities, women, individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and children under five can visit, present their cards, and receive services free of charge.”
