Lagos officials take action by demolishing additional buildings constructed on drainage channels

To combat the issue of flooding in the region, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has initiated the destruction of properties built along the System 157 drainage channel on Orchid Road in the Eti-Osa district of Lagos.

On Thursday, the ministry’s commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this development through a video and images shared on X.com.

After engaging with property owners for several months whose constructions encroached on the crucial drainage path, Wahab stated that this action was taken.

Despite the discussions and a proposed redesign plan, the property owners did not adhere to the agreed terms, as mentioned by Wahab.

Wahab mentioned, “Following numerous months spent engaging with property owners whose constructions hindered Systems 156 and 157 drainage paths, with unfulfilled promises to adopt the redesigned plan, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has started the process of removing unlawful structures built on the canal along System 157 – Orchid Road – Eti Osa drainage channels to prevent flooding in the area.”

As per a PUNCH report from June, similar actions were taken by the ministry to eliminate structures blocking the natural flow of rainwater which caused flooding in Okezie Ugbaja Street and other sections of Okota, Oshodi – Isolo Local Government Area.
