Labour issues 7-day ultimatum over Electricity tariff hike

A protest letter has been sent by the organized labour, represented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Signed jointly by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, the letter was also addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Federal Minister of Labour & Employment, Federal Minister of Power, and all Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs). The ultimatum given is until May 12, 2024, for NERC to reverse the tariff hike, or face mass action.

Stating the adverse impact of NERC’s decision on the population, the unions emphasized the necessity of overturning the hike to prevent further hardships.

In a section of the letter, it was mentioned, “We consider this decision not only morally reprehensible given the current challenges faced by Nigerians but also a clear violation of essential principles and legal obligations.

“It represents a severe injustice and lack of equity, which we cannot tolerate as the public and workers endure unjust exploitation.”

The leaders further expressed disappointment in NERC for not upholding its regulatory duties in the electricity sector.

They criticized NERC for allegedly supporting the unjust pricing strategies of the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and the Generating Companies (GENCOs), contrary to its impartial role mandated by law.

The announced tariff increase was condemned for bypassing legal procedures and disregarding the rights of Nigerian citizens.

The ultimatum given by the two unions requires compliance by Sunday, May 12, 2024, failure of which will prompt swift and resolute action on their part.
