In a conversation with KEHINDE AJOSE, popular singer Korede Bello discusses his career and various topics.

How has your sound and lyrics evolved over time?

Life naturally instigates change and encourages growth in all aspects. An artist is essentially a philosopher of experiences. Therefore, as one encounters more of life, it inevitably seeps into their art.

Can you recreate the monumental success of a song like ‘Godwin’?

A masterpiece is unique and irreplaceable. There’s a spiritual essence to music that transcends mere replication. Each song carries a distinct aura that cannot be mimicked. Humility as an artist lies in recognizing the divine grace that propels one’s work.

Post ‘Godwin’, I’ve been blessed with several successful hits globally. However, I’m forever grateful for the impact of ‘Godwin’ as it thrust me into the limelight. Each song I birth is a privilege, aiming to resonate with both God and humanity, irrespective of its commercial reach.

Why did it take so long to release your latest album?

The album was intricately linked to my birthday, which falls on February 29 during a leap year. This unique date pattern made me wait for four years to mark my birthday. ‘Kore Day’ birthed the album, embodying a personal narrative akin to a therapeutic session.

How do you perceive the current generation of young artists within the industry?

The prevalent influx of young talents in the industry is commendable. Youthful vigor often translates to ambitious global aspirations, injecting vitality into the music landscape.

While youthfulness brings dynamism, there’s a concern regarding the depth of narratives conveyed through music. Seasoned artists draw from profound life encounters, enriching their artistry. Authenticity stems from a well of experiences, fostering timeless messages.

Icons like Fela, King Sunny Ade, and Bob Marley exemplified how personal journeys shape musical legacies, offering invaluable insights to listeners.

Where’s the oddest place you’ve found inspiration for a song?

Inspiration knows no bounds; every space holds artistic potential. Pain, in its essence, births captivating art. Interestingly, this question itself might spark a new song idea!

What’s your perspective on Nigerian artists relying on foreign platforms like the Grammys for recognition?

Validation of artistic endeavors is essential, with prestigious awards offering a commendable accolade. However, intrinsic rewards and impact overshadow external validations. True fulfillment arises from resonating with audiences and sowing joy through one’s craft.

Yemi Alade’s collaboration on ‘For Me’ was a harmonious synergy of creative expressions. Her unique imprint elevated the song’s essence, infusing a distinct flavor.

Our collaboration stemmed from a desire to craft a jubilant track. Don Jazzy’s unwavering enthusiasm and musical prowess resulted in a joyful creation, resonating with our audience.

How do you handle criticism and negative feedback?

Criticism, whether constructive or disparaging, molds one’s growth. Filtering feedback aids in honing one’s craft, navigating the complexities of public perception. Differentiating opinions from facts is crucial in this journey.

What does success signify to you beyond commercial triumphs and accolades?

Success transcends chart positions and awards, embodying a legacy that transcends time. Impactful artistry that resonates across generations, fostering unity and leaving a lasting imprint, defines success for me.
