Emotional Reunion as Kaduna Students Return Home, Family of Deceased Teacher Receives N10m

Under heavy security, the 137 Kuriga schoolchildren bid farewell to Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, on Thursday, as they set off to reunite with their families in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area.

During a brief ceremony, the governor not only announced a N10m donation to the deceased teacher’s family, who passed away due to health issues while in captivity, but also expressed his support for the children.

Abducted by terrorists on March 7, the 137 schoolchildren were ultimately freed in Zamfara State and returned to Kaduna for psychosocial therapy before their joyful reunion with their families on Thursday.

During the welfare ceremony, the governor also promised scholarships for the children of the late teacher, Mallam Abubakar, who tragically passed away in captivity.

Isah Abubakar, one of the deceased teacher’s children and a rescued pupil, witnessed his father’s demise at the hands of the bandits.

Cutting short his trip from Abuja, the governor bid the children farewell after a four-day therapy session and expressed his commitment to supporting the education of all 137 pupils up to university level through the ‘Uba Sani Foundation.’

Additionally, the governor announced plans for rehabilitation projects in the Kuriga community and the school.

He explained, “We deemed it necessary to provide extended support to the children as some required psychological assistance upon their return. We engaged psychologists and medical professionals to cater to their needs.

“Today, seeing the children happy and in high spirits brings me joy. You are going back home to your eagerly awaiting families, but remember, you are all like my own children.

“Through the Uba Sani Foundation, which has been active for 16 years, I will be overseeing the education of all 137 of you.

“Our administration will also spearhead rehabilitation efforts in the Kuriga community and the school. This decision stems from the fact that Kuriga is known for its tranquility in Kaduna State.

“Furthermore, the Kaduna State Government has pledged N10m to support Malam Abubakar’s family, along with scholarships for his children until they complete their education.”

The governor assured the schoolchildren of his periodic visits to Kuriga to monitor their educational progress.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters highlighted how the distress caused by the abducted Kuriga schoolchildren played a crucial role in their successful rescue operation.

Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, emphasized the armed forces’ continuous commitment to safeguarding citizens and combating acts of terror.

He stated, ”The recent rescues in Sokoto and Kaduna States reflect the armed forces’ dedication to protecting the populace against threats and maintaining peace and security.

“The troops were swift in responding to the distress signals emitted by the children, leading to their successful rescue mission.”
