Kaduna court sends housewife to prison for calling neighbour a ”prostitute”

The Shari’a Court in Rigasa, Kaduna has handed a two-week prison sentence to Mariya Muhammad, a housewife, with no option for fine, after she was found guilty of calling her neighbor, Hajiya Karima Sani, a prostitute. The Judge, Dahiru Bamalli, imposed the sentence after Mariya pleaded guilty to defamation of character.

Sani, who resides in the Rigasa area of Kaduna, explained to the court that she and Mariya had maintained a typical neighborly relationship with its ups and downs. She chose to take legal action against Mariya because she had been falsely labeled a prostitute, which she denied as she is a married woman.

During the cross-examination, Mariya justified her actions by pointing out that Sani had also insulted her in the past, leading her to retaliate by calling Sani a prostitute.
