Journalists in Kano faced assault from hoodlums, NUJ expresses outrage

During the recent nationwide protest against governance issues, journalists in Kano were viciously attacked by hoodlums who exploited the chaos to unleash violence and chaos.

A bus transporting 11 journalists from various media organizations, both print and broadcast, including Channels Television, was ambushed by armed hoodlums on Sokoto Road, Kano State.

In a statement issued to the press on Thursday, the Chairman of the Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Abbas Ibrahim, and Secretary Abba Murtala revealed the details of the incident.

The NUJ leaders in Kano reported that the hoodlums targeted the bus, breaking its windows as it passed by, causing injuries to some of the journalists on board from the flying glass fragments.

Furthermore, another vehicle carrying reporters from Wazobia, Cool FM, and the Arewa group was also attacked by the hoodlums near the Kano Government House.

Expressing strong condemnation for the assaults, the NUJ leaders emphasized, “It is lawful for citizens to engage in peaceful protests, but it is unacceptable and illegal to intimidate and harm others.

“We unequivocally denounce the violent attack on journalists who are fulfilling their duties as responsible members of society, contributing to the advancement and growth of our nation.

“We urge the relevant authorities to uphold law and order in the state and ensure the safety of all citizens.”
