Investigation Launched by Police Following Death of Suspected Cultist in Ogun Cell

The Ogun state police command has begun an investigation into the death of a suspected cultist in a police cell.

A statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, stated that following an intelligence report, suspected cultists on the wanted list were apprehended in the Atoyo area of Sagamu on Tuesday, November 18, 2023, after a covert operation was carried out by the police.

During interrogation, two suspected cultists, identified as Oduyiga Seyi Samson and Gbenga Adejoke, confessed to being members of the Buccaneer and Eiye confraternity secret cults.

Addressing allegations of torture, Odutola stated that the deceased had been charged for cult-related activities and was scheduled to be arraigned before a special court on cultism case in Isabo Abeokuta. However, he was brought back to Eleweran in Abeokuta when the court did not sit.

According to Odutola, on Friday, November 24, Seyi exhibited aggressive behavior in the cell, leading to his transfer to the police hospital and eventually to Ijaye General Hospital Abeokuta, where he later passed away while receiving medical attention.

Odutola mentioned that as soon as the autopsy report is available, the police will provide further details and stressed the commitment of the Ogun police command to upholding fundamental human rights laws and prohibiting torture.

‘’Ogun state police command is well versed in the legal framework that safeguards the rights of individuals in custody, free from all forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment” Odutola said
