Internet Facilities Donated by UNILAG 1984 Alumni

Enhancing research and learning capabilities, the 1984 alumni of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos have generously donated internet facilities to their alma mater.

With the aim of equipping students with essential skills and resources for long-term competitiveness post-graduation, this donation includes cable LAN devices and the installation of 21 wireless access points across offices and classrooms within the department. The gesture was part of the activities commemorating the class’s 40th anniversary.

During the unveiling ceremony, Mr. Fred Ohwawha, the alumni chairman, expressed, “Today, we inaugurated an upgraded Internet facility. Having graduated from this university 40 years ago, we have undertaken various projects over the years. However, we returned to explore how we could further contribute.”

“We all recognize that we are in a digital age, and without the Internet, students face challenges in keeping up. Therefore, by providing Internet access to students and staff in the department, we aim to ensure seamless academic activities whenever they are on campus.”

“We have intervened to enhance the educational infrastructure of the department, viewing this as a collective project of our class. We consider ourselves a close-knit family, proud to give back to the department that molded us into the professionals we are today. This initiative holds great significance for us, especially as we celebrate our 40th anniversary,” added Ohwawha.

Representing UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, commended the alumni group for their altruistic donation, emphasizing its reflection of the university’s strong bond with its former students.

“This act of generosity underscores the value of alumni engagement and dedication to our institution’s growth. We express our gratitude for your contributions to our university’s progress.

“You have set an inspiring example for future generations by showcasing the impact of alumni support on educational advancement. Your commitment shows us that with your backing, we can continue to maintain our position as the preferred university of choice.”

Acknowledging the donation, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Prof. Oloruntola Sunday, described it as “timely and fitting,” foreseeing its significant enhancement of the department’s ability to nurture well-prepared graduates ready to excel in the digital era.

“We are committed to the proper utilization and maintenance of these facilities, ensuring that our students benefit fully. Monitoring and guidance on the use of this project will be priorities for us,” assured Prof. Sunday.
