Commencing this afternoon, the US Senate has initiated the impeachment trial of US president Donald Trump, predicated on accusations from the House of Representatives. The charges allege him of Abusing his office and obstructing Justice by withholding military aid to Ukraine in return for an inquiry into his political rival, Joe Biden.
The Senate, controlled by Trump’s Republican party, holds significant influence over the course of the proceedings. Many political analysts speculate that the charges against Trump will be dismissed.
Trump is being represented by his legal team, while the House of Representatives is represented by House Impeachment managers.
