Initiative by Cross River State: Deployment of Motorcycles and Hilux Vehicles for Cholera and Tuberculosis Monitoring

Addressing the cholera and tuberculosis challenges in Cross River State, the state government has dispatched 36 motorcycles to remote areas for health monitoring purposes.

In a show of support for the state’s efforts, international health partners have contributed new Hilux vehicles to enhance these initiatives.

Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, the Commissioner of Health in Cross River State, verified this development and mentioned that the vehicles are being utilized for activities related to TB and cholera in the state.

During a press briefing at his office to review his ministry’s accomplishments over the past year, the commissioner stated, “We have successfully contained the transmission of tuberculosis and cholera within the state.”

“To facilitate the field staff and their aides, the 36 motorcycles have been assigned to various primary healthcare centers (PHCs) to improve their mobility,” he added.

“These motorcycles were generously donated by the World Health Organization (WHO), and we have also received generous support from other health partners, for which we are deeply appreciative.”

The commissioner revealed that they have renovated 196 PHCs and assured that this number will be doubled by the year’s end.

“I can confidently state that there have been no reported cases of cholera during the recent nationwide outbreak in the state,” he emphasized.

“This success can be attributed to the strong relationships and assistance we have received from stakeholders and health partners,” he acknowledged.

“The state’s TB program has been equipped with 36 motorcycles, allocated to the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs). We are eagerly anticipating the arrival of digital X-ray machines to facilitate TB diagnosis in our secondary healthcare facilities,” he further explained.

“Additionally, we are set to revitalize another 196 PHC facilities, bringing the total to 392, with the backing of support from the World Bank,” he added.
