Increasing Attacks on Journalists Covering Protests: IPC Expresses Concern

The International Press Centre has sounded the alarm regarding the rise in attacks on journalists by security forces and criminals. These attacks are seen as deliberate efforts to deter journalists from reporting the reality of the ongoing protests.

In a recent incident, officials from the National Security Adviser’s office seized the camera and phones of NewsNow photojournalist, Kayode Jaiyeola. Despite this, his belongings have not been returned as of now.

In another incident, police in the Federal Capital Territory fired tear gas at journalists covering a protest at the Berger roundabout. Additionally, masked security personnel fired shots at journalists at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Further highlighting the dangers journalists face, a Premium Times reporter’s car was hit by bullets while carrying journalists away from the scene. Journalists from various outlets, including The Punch, The Cable, Premium Times, and Peoples Gazette, were in the vehicle.

In Maiduguri, Borno State, nine Radio Ndarason Internationale staff members were arrested by security forces while covering the protests.

Throughout the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, numerous journalists have faced harassment and intimidation from either security personnel or criminals.

Expressing concern over these incidents, IPC emphasized the risks journalists encounter and how these attacks undermine the credibility of the information that the public relies on to comprehend the situation fully.

IPC’s Press Freedom Officer, Melody Akinjiyan, stated, “Journalists covering the protests continue to be targeted, victimized, and subjected to brutal assaults by security forces, criminals, and anti-protesters, which is unacceptable.”

Describing the escalating attacks as an attempt to silence the media, Akinjiyan urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and other security chiefs to ensure the protection of journalists.

He added, “It is imperative for all stakeholders to unite against the mistreatment of journalists and demand immediate safeguards for those reporting from the field. Our collective advocacy is vital in advocating for their safety and ensuring that their crucial work proceeds without hindrance.”

IPC remains committed to denouncing such brutality and promoting a renewed dedication to respect the rights and dignity of all journalists.
