Imo decision will haunt electoral jurisprudence for a long time – Supreme Court Justice

The statement made by Supreme Court Justice Chima Centus Nweze, who participated in the panel overseeing the review appeal of the Imo case filed by Emeka Ihedioha, expressed concern over the future implications of the Supreme Court’s decision. The decision in question pertained to the declaration of the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Hope Uzodinma, as the valid winner of the November 2019 Governorship election in Imo state, leading to the order for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Emeka Ihedioha, to vacate the governor’s office. Justice Nweze elaborated on his apprehensions, touching upon past instances where the Supreme Court reversed its judgments and affirming that the apex court misled itself in declaring Uzodinma as governor without meeting other constitutional provisions. He emphasized the importance of the Supreme Court being able to overrule itself and revisit decisions not aligned with justice. The Justice stressed the far-reaching impact of the Supreme Court’s decision on electoral jurisprudence and advocated for the restoration of the respondents as the winner of the March 9 governorship election.
