Ibadan Indigenes Urge Masquerades to Avoid Hooliganism and Thuggery During Egungun Festival

A group of Ibadan indigenes known as Ibadan Mega Voice (IMV) have offered advice to masquerades and their followers, urging them to steer clear of hooliganism and thuggery during the upcoming Egungun festival.

The traditional Egungun festival commenced in Ibadan on Sunday, with masquerades set to make appearances at various significant locations in the historic city.

Some of the places on the itinerary include the family compound of the Olubadan-designate, Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin in the Ita Baale area of Ibadan.

Other stops include the family compounds of the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja in Isale Osi Area, Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, Tajudeen Abimbola Ajibola in Agbeni Area, and that of the Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, Eddy Oyewole in Foko Area.

IMV has issued a caution to the masquerades and their followers to avoid engaging in hooliganism and thuggery during the festival.

In a statement signed by its President, Kola Olomide, the group congratulated the Olubadan-designate for being present at the annual Egungun festival.

Olomide, through the statement made accessible to NewsNow on Monday, advised the masquerades and their followers to refrain from any acts of hooliganism or thuggery during and after the festival.

He further stated, “This yearly celebration of cultural heritage aims to unite the community in pride and harmony.

“The festival showcases the esteemed Ibadan Egungun masquerades, symbolizing our cultural traditions and legacy. It stands as a testament to the strength and identity of the Ibadan people.

“It is crucial to stress the significance of upholding peace and reverence throughout the festivities. Participants are encouraged to observe traditional customs and practices, ensuring a peaceful atmosphere free from any disruptions.

“Safety remains a primary concern, with organizers and law enforcement offering guidance to ensure safe conduct of all activities, particularly in crowded areas. Let us mark this occasion with dignity and respect, embracing our cultural heritage with pride”.
