I did everything possible – Chelsea midfielder apologises to Argentina coach

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has apologised to Argentina’s Under-23 manager, Javier Mascherano, as he won’t be able to participate in the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Fernandez is currently with the senior Albiceleste team at the ongoing 2024 Copa America in the United States.

Fernandez helped them to the knockouts with a game to spare after winning their opening two games.

The 22-year-old, who helped Argentina secure a spot in the knockout stage, said that he had the approval of former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino to play in the Olympics.

But a change of coach in the summer meant that Chelsea revoked their permission to let Fernandez play in the Olympics.

Speaking on the development, Fernandez said (as per Fabrizio Romano): “I did everything possible to be there, Pochettino had given me the ok. There was a change of coach, and the club changed its position. I did everything possible to be there. I apologise to Mascherano.”
