Lions attack and eat 30-year-old man at South African game reserve

A man aged 30 was attacked and devoured by lions at the Dinokeng Game Reserve in Gauteng, South Africa.

The deceased, known as Johannes Matshe, worked for one of the landowners at the reserve and was killed on the night of August 13. His remains were discovered on the morning of August 14, 2023.

The spokesperson for the reserve, Hartogh Streicher, confirmed the incident on Thursday, August 17.

“The individual was tragically attacked and killed by lions while attempting to navigate the reserve on foot after dark,” stated Streicher.

“Walking within the DGR during the night, or at any time, is strictly forbidden in accordance with reserve regulations,” he added.

He explained that the incident came to light when the vigilant reserve fencing team of DGR stumbled upon what seemed to be human remains at approximately 10.37am on Monday.

“The operations manager responded promptly, confirming the unfortunate loss of life,” he said.

Streicher reported that the SAPS was immediately notified.

“An investigation is underway,” he added.

Following the tragedy, The Dinokeng Game Enterprises (DGE), who own the wildlife of Dinokeng Game Reserve, a separate company chaired by Michael Daymond, have confirmed that they have applied for a permit to euthanize the three lions to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Environment (GDARDE).

Daymond expressed his sadness about the tragic event and extended his condolences to the family.

Streicher emphasized that as part of safety regulations, pedestrian traffic is not allowed within the reserve, and exiting vehicles is restricted to designated areas only.

“This incident highlights the necessity for both visitors and landowners to exercise caution when interacting with the reserve’s wildlife. By respecting the rules and displaying responsible behavior, a safer environment for all can be ensured,” Streicher concluded.
