Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court, Abuja, has instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly restart the continuous Voter Registration (CVR) until 90 days prior to the 2023 general elections.
Rendering judgment in a suit brought by Anajat Salmat and three others against INEC, the court mandated that INEC cannot halt the CVR in contradiction to the constitutional provisions.
In the ruling delivered on November 22, the judge directed INEC to ensure that eligible Nigerians are not deprived of the opportunity to obtain the voter’s card for the upcoming poll. The judge emphasized that it is the constitutional responsibility of the electoral umpire to make adequate provision for the exercise in compliance with Nigerian laws.
“The case of the plaintiffs succeeds on merit,” the judge stated.
