Catholic Bishop’s Warning to Priests on False Teaching

Within the Enugu Diocese, the Catholic Bishop, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, cautions priests against the spread of incorrect teachings among their congregation. This guidance was provided during a homily at Holy Ghost Cathedral in Enugu during a Chrism Mass on Thursday.

Chrism Mass, celebrated on Holy Thursday, is a time when priests reaffirm their commitment and receive the consecration with the oil of Chrism.

Bishop Onaga stresses the importance of vigilance in the words spoken by priests, as their followers trust and honor them with the title of Father. He emphasizes that the duty of priests is a divine responsibility to proclaim the Word of God entrusted to them with integrity.

In his address, Bishop Onaga underscores that the words shared by priests carry significant weight, not only within the church but in all aspects of life. He warns that spreading falsehoods misguides parishioners and leads to dishonesty and false testimony.

The bishop elucidates that priests hold the sacred duty of safeguarding the teachings of God’s word and should steer clear of erroneous sermons and predictions.

The clergy are urged to exhibit a compassionate and loving spirit in alignment with the essence of priesthood, which is rooted in love. Bishop Onaga emphasizes that love should govern their teachings, and they should embody the teachings of Christ in all their actions.

Furthermore, the bishop advises priests to shun feelings of resentment, avarice, self-centeredness, and arrogance. Instead, they are encouraged to approach their work with humility and love for the service of God.

The focal point of the Holy Mass was the renewal of vows and commitments by over 500 priests during their ordination, alongside the blessings and consecration of various oils for the sacraments.
