Hair salon owner jailed for defying lockdown via video conferencing

The owner of Dallas-based Salon à la Mode, Shelley Luther, has been imprisoned for refusing to comply with lockdown regulations, despite operating her business via video conferencing.

Luther was incarcerated for seven days after she persisted with keeping her salon open in violation of a temporary restraining order. She disregarded fines imposed by the county’s criminal and civil courts for each day the salon remained in operation.

During the hearing, Luther explained her decision to keep the salon open, citing financial obligations to herself and her stylists. She was given the option to avoid imprisonment by issuing an apology, closing the salon, and paying a fine, but she refused, emphasizing the need to provide for her family.

The judge, Eric Moye, stressed the importance of adhering to the law and criticized Luther for her lack of contrition and defiance. He condemned her flagrant disobedience and intentional violation of the court’s order.

Luther’s arrest occurred as Governor Greg Abbott eased lockdown restrictions, permitting the reopening of barbershops and hair salons.
