Gunmen seize ex-Rep in Delta, leaving two dead

In a tragic incident in Asaba, Delta State, two police orderlies assigned to former House of Representatives member Joan Onyemaechi and her driver have reportedly lost their lives following an attack on Tuesday evening.

According to reports from PUNCH Metro, armed assailants invaded her church, King Jesus and I, situated on Ogajifo Street off DSB Road. They opened fire on the police orderlies and driver before abducting the former legislator and her children.

Local sources mentioned that a stray bullet also claimed the life of a passerby at the scene.

An eyewitness shared, “The attackers entered the church premises and immediately gunned down the police orderlies and the driver. Subsequently, they drove off with the lawmaker in her SUV, firing shots recklessly on the street. Regrettably, a stray bullet fatally hit a young man.”

Onyemaechi previously served as the Commissioner for Technical Education in Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration before stepping down to pave the way for her younger brother to contest the chairmanship position in the recent council elections.

Following inquiries, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, acknowledged the abduction incident but clarified that one police officer and one civilian were the casualties.

He confirmed, “A police officer and another individual lost their lives; the identity of the second victim is unclear at this time. Only the former lawmaker was taken by the assailants.”
