Group Seeks Support from Abiodun and Expresses Concern over Alleged Marginalization

A demand for equal representation and opportunities for the Afon zone in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State has been put forward by a socio-political group known as Progressive Patriots. They are urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to assist the zone in selecting the next LG Chairman.

During a news conference in Abeokuta on Thursday, the Chairman of the group, Biyi Ogunrinola, emphasized the divide within the LG between the Imeko/Ketu division and the Afon zone, also known as the Isokan division.

Ogunrinola expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that for the past 28 years since the establishment of the LG, the Imeko/Ketu division has consistently held leadership positions while the Afon community has been marginalized.

He highlighted the deep sense of injustice felt by the Afon people and called on Abiodun to heed their plea and ensure that the next chairman hails from the Afon zone.

Stressing that Imeko-Afon LG is the shared heritage of both Ketu and Isokan divisions, Ogunrinola asserted that the right of the Afon zone to produce the next local government chairman should be respected without compromise.

Pointing out the current distribution of political offices in Imeko Ward and Ketu Division, Ogunrinola underscored the need for the state governor and APC leaders to address the imbalance and ensure a fair electoral process.

He emphasized, “We demand fair treatment and an end to marginalization. Our zone deserves equal representation and opportunities.

“It is crucial to address the longstanding issue faced by the Afon division, which comprises Afon, Owode-Obada, Agboro/Olorunda, and Atapele Wards in Imeko-Afon Local Government.

“Despite actively advocating for the creation of our local government since 1996, our zone has continuously been denied the chance to produce the Local Government Chairman, a position monopolized by Imeko Township and Ketu division.”
