Group calls on IGP to halt attacks on journalists during EndBadGovernace protests

The recent attacks on journalists who were covering the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests have deeply concerned the African Centre for Media & Information Literacy (AFRICMIL).

In response, the group has urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and other security agencies to ensure law and order is maintained.

Despite President Bola Tinubu’s address, the protests that commenced on August 1, 2024, are ongoing in various states across the nation.

In a statement released on Monday by Dr. Chido Onumah, the coordinator of the group, they vehemently condemned the violent acts perpetrated by the police against journalists and citizens.

Stressing the importance of upholding citizens’ right to freedom of assembly and expression within the legal framework of the country, the group highlighted the constitutional provisions supporting these freedoms.

“Attacking journalists while they cover the protests is a violation of the constitutional rights that guarantee freedom of expression and press freedom,” the statement conveyed.

The group called on the Inspector General of Police to rein in erring officers and halt the assaults on journalists and protesters.

The protests against bad governance stem from the economic hardships inflicted on Nigerians by misguided policies, extravagant government spending, and economic mismanagement.

Since the sudden removal of fuel subsidies and the currency devaluation announced by the current administration on May 29, 2023, the populace has endured soaring prices of essential commodities.

The insensitivity of the government’s expenditure, including lavish projects like a new residence for the Vice President and expensive vehicles for lawmakers, has further exacerbated the citizens’ suffering.

The group emphasized that the #EndBadGovernance protests are a direct result of the government’s neglect of the people’s welfare, with citizens expressing their discontent through lawful means.

The police have no justification for targeting journalists covering the protests or intimidating peaceful protesters, the group reiterated.

Therefore, they once again called on the Inspector General of Police to intervene and put a stop to all forms of harassment against journalists carrying out their professional duties.
