Gracheva wins first match at Wimbledon 2024

France’s Varvara Gracheva was the first winner at the 2024 Wimbledon tournament on Monday, beating Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 6-3, 6-1 in just over an hour.

The Russian-born Gracheva, ranked 70th in the world, broke her opponent five times in total in a dominant performance under cloudy skies on Court 5.

Tsurenko, 59th in the world, made 20 unforced errors compared with her opponent’s eight.

Gracheva will face 28th seed Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine or Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska in the second round.

PUNCH Online reports that Wimbledon 2024 started today, July 1 and will end on July 14 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London.

The singles finals will be held on Sunday, July 14, while the doubles finals are scheduled for Saturday, July 13

Wimbledon, officially known as The Championships, Wimbledon, is the oldest and one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world.

It is held annually at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London.

The tournament takes place over two weeks in late June and early July and is the third Grand Slam event of the year, following the Australian Open and the French Open, and preceding the US Open.
