Governor Otti: Not Focusing on Employment Currently

During a recent media briefing in Umuahia, Abia State Governor Alex Otti stated that employing new individuals in the state’s civil service is not currently a top priority for his administration.

He emphasized that the government’s primary focus is on addressing existing issues within the civil service before considering new hires.

Otti highlighted that there is an existing employment embargo that remains in effect, and despite efforts to reduce the workforce through verification processes, the number of employees in the civil service remains disproportionately high.

The governor expressed concern over the substantial monthly wage bill of approximately four billion naira for both the local government and state employees.

Nevertheless, Otti reassured that the government is diligently working towards enhancing the compensation packages for civil servants, acknowledging the need for improved performance among existing staff.

While acknowledging the challenges associated with downsizing due to civil service rules, Governor Otti mentioned ongoing efforts to streamline operations through the establishment of the Civil Service Commission, along with the appointment of new key officials.

The focus is on providing proper training and support to ensure that civil servants are equipped with the necessary skills to enhance their productivity and effectiveness in their roles.
