Government makes commitment to restore electricity in Ebonyi community after a 13-year hiatus

After a 13-year absence of power supply in Afikpo communities, the Ebonyi State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to reinstating electricity in the area.

Mr Peter Oga-Ali, the State Commissioner for Power and Energy, provided this assurance following an inspection of the power project in Afikpo, located in Afikpo Local Government Area of the state.

Updating on the progress, Oga-Ali mentioned the allocation of N208 million by the state governor, Francis Nwifuru, which facilitated the installation of eight new transformers.

In response to social media accusations of misappropriation of funds meant for the power restoration, Oga-Ali refuted the claims, stating, “Some locals have directly accused me and the ministry of diverting the funds.”

Additionally, Oga-Ali mentioned, “The completion of the Amasiri sub-station in the local government area ensures consistent power supply. Five old transformers have been refurbished and installed alongside the new ones.

“Our current challenge stems from the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway construction, necessitating the relocation of high voltage lines between Nkalagu and Ntezi.

“Once the pole relocations are finalized, power will be restored in the region. All necessary restoration work has been concluded, with commendations to the field engineers for their quality work,” noting that the total funds amounted to N208 million, post-tax deductions leaving N194m.”

The commissioner emphasized, “On February 28, 2024, N194m was disbursed to the ministry for the procurement and installation of eight new transformers, as well as the rehabilitation of collapsed electrical lines in Afikpo.

“Furthermore, five additional transformers were refurbished and installed in Enohia Nkalu, Amaozara, and Ozizza communities.

“A completion notification was forwarded to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) on May 23 by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, followed by a joint inspection team.”

He cleared the air concerning the energy transmission responsibility, stating that the Transmission Company of Nigeria ensures energy transmission between stations, attributing ministry delays to the energy supply in Afikpo.

In conclusion, the commissioner urged the populace to remain patient and law-abiding, promising continued efforts in addressing technical issues to reinstate power supply to the region.
