Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has lauded the performances of new Super Eagles players Samuel Kalu and Josh Maja, who both feature for the French Ligue 1 club, Bordeaux.

The Franco-German tactician made a surprise visit to Maja and Samuel Kalu in France ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone in March.

Maja has contributed seven goals and three assists for Bordeaux this season, while Kalu has seen limited playing time. Rohr, who previously played for Bordeaux and managed the team, believes that both Super Eagles stars can excel in the French league and for the national team.

In an interview with RIG 90.7 FM, Bordeaux, Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr stated, “Samuel Kalu is a speedy winger with exceptional dribbling ability, who can play on both flanks. He possesses the defensive work rate expected of wingers.”

Discussing Kalu’s strengths, Rohr added, “His assets include dribbling, speed, and goal-scoring ability. His wonderful goal against Benin showcased his knack for scoring. He is a valuable asset to the team both on and off the pitch.”

Rohr also hailed Maja’s attacking prowess, labeling him as a ‘genuine goalscorer’ and expressed his intention to include him in the Super Eagles squad if he maintains his form.

“The same applies to Josh Maja, a young talent from England whom we had been monitoring before he joined Girondins. He has demonstrated his abilities on multiple occasions, including our match in Ukraine. His potential depends on the playing time he receives, given his goal-scoring prowess and technical skills. He has a promising future and possesses speed, movement, and a commendable mentality.”

“I saw them both at the Haillan training center, and it’s very nice to have good players like that at the Girondins,” added Rohr.

“Confidence in themselves is important, but also the confidence of the staff.’

‘When a player feels that a coach appreciates him, that he wants to help him, that he counts on him, etc, it gives him a boost.”
