Funke Akindele’s ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ grosses N1bn

The Nollywood film ‘A Tribe Called Judah’, produced by Funke Akindele, has achieved a remarkable feat by grossing over N1bn within 21 days of its release in cinemas. Funke Akindele shared the exciting news on her Instagram page, expressing gratitude to the audience in Nigeria and Ghana. The movie, which premiered on December 15, 2023, has broken several records, including becoming the first Nollywood film to generate over N133m in its opening weekend and surpassing N613m in its first 14 days.

Directed by Adeoluwa Owu (Captain Degzy), the film revolves around a family of boys planning to rob a mall to raise money for their mother’s medical expenses, only to encounter armed robbers at the mall. The star-studded cast includes Nse Ikpe Etim, Timini Egbuson, Ebelle Okaro, Uzor Arukwe, Genoveva Umeh, Nosa Rex, and more.

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ is a poignant story about a woman named Jedidah Judah, who has five sons from different men, each belonging to different tribes. Akindele, the producer, revealed that the film holds a special place in her heart as it embodies the struggles faced by single parents and mothers in society, with a touch of her late mother’s influence.

This groundbreaking movie premiered at Filmhouse Cinema IMAX, Lekki, Lagos, on December 10, 2023, to much fanfare. Additionally, it is currently being screened in cinemas in Ghana and the United Kingdom.
