France emerges victorious over D’Tigress in Olympics Basketball showdown

The senior women’s basketball team of Nigeria, D’Tigress, faced their first defeat at the Paris 2024 Olympics, losing 75-54 to France in their second Group C encounter in Paris on Thursday, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

The match, which paled in comparison to the impressive 75-54 victory over Australia in their first game, saw Ezinne Kalu shining as the standout performer of the day. The New Jersey-born point guard and three-time AfroBasket champion continued her remarkable form in the game.

Despite their promising start with a win against the Opals on Monday, Rena Wakama’s squad aimed for a back-to-back win but faced a tough French team that excelled in defense.

Gabby Williams’ contribution of 14 points, seven assists, and six steals led France to their second win, maintaining a flawless 2-0 record in the tournament at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

France showcased their defensive prowess by limiting Nigeria to the same score as their victory over Canada in their opening game.

Marine Johannes scored 15 points for the French team, displaying their aggressive and physical style throughout the game with 14 fouls and 13 steals.

The French team’s dominance was evident inside the paint, as they successfully converted 22-of-35 shots from within the 3-point line.

Despite the loss, Kalu continued her excellent form with 18 points, although the team lacked significant support apart from Murjanatu Liman Musa’s contribution of 14 points.

Nigeria’s total points fell short of the 75 scored in the opening game against Australia, with 15 points coming from free throws.

With a 1-1 record, D’Tigress now stands alongside Australia, while Canada lags behind at 0-2.

Wakama’s squad will have an opportunity to secure a historic spot in the knockout stage when they face Canada on Saturday, while France aims to maintain their flawless record in the group stage against Australia.
