Former SGF, Lawal advises Tinubu to Persuade Nigerians instead of Issuing Threats

Dr Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has urged President Bola Tinubu to address the nation promptly with convincing arguments to calm the frustrated and needy citizens rather than resorting to threats against the planned hunger protests.

The seasoned technocrat cautioned that in the current atmosphere, Nigerians cannot be cowed by the government’s intimidation tactics or tough rhetoric.

In a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, Lawal suggested that the President should lay out tangible and credible government policies aimed at tackling present challenges in the short, medium, and long term.

Regarding the upcoming nationwide protests, he emphasized that immediate plans must be realistic and feasible to gain the trust and cooperation of the people for successful implementation.

Lawal proposed, “If I were to offer advice to Alhaji Bola Tinubu, I would recommend that the President reshuffle the cabinet, get rid of underperforming members, and incorporate more politicians. During times like these, a mix of technocrats and politicians is necessary in the cabinet.”

He further added, “Politicians excel in communicating with the populace and have a vested interest in the government’s successes or failures.”

Lawal also highlighted the need to address the prevalent nepotism within the government, particularly the overrepresentation of the South West region in key positions of authority.

He expressed concerns about the growing discontent across the nation due to perceived injustices and unequal treatment in various regions.

Lawal concluded by stating, “I hope for a peaceful hunger protest in Nigeria. It would be heartening to see the President and his predecessor joining the protesters, as they did during the Goodluck Jonathan era.”
