FIFA hit Hungary with two-game stadium ban and £160k fine after England stars Raheem and Bellingham were targeted by racist abuse

FIFA Punishes Hungary with Two-Game Stadium Ban and £160k Fine for Racist Abuse Targeting England Stars Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham

Following the recent World Cup qualifier, FIFA has taken action against the Hungary Football Association by imposing a two-game stadium ban and a hefty £160,000 fine for the racist abuse directed at England players.

As stated by the world football governing body, Hungary will be playing their next home game behind closed doors, with the second match ban suspended for a probationary period of two years.

Additionally, they have been issued a substantial £160,000 fine, significantly surpassing previous fines imposed on the nation by FIFA.

During the game, Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham were subjected to monkey chants, and England’s starting XI faced widespread booing for taking the knee before kick-off.

Furthermore, England players and staff were targeted with missiles throughout the game.

FIFA conveyed its decision in a statement, declaring that “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed a ban and a substantial fine on the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) in relation to the racist behaviour of numerous supporters during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifying match between Hungary and England on 2 September 2021.”

After analyzing the circumstances, including racist incidents, throwing of objects, fireworks, and blocked stairways, the Committee determined that the next two home matches in FIFA competitions for MLSZ will be without spectators, with the second match ban suspended for a probationary period of two years. Additionally, a fine of CHF 200,000 has been imposed. FIFA reiterates its strong stance against racism, violence, and discrimination, emphasizing zero tolerance for such behavior in football.” The decision has been communicated to the MLSZ.
