Fidelis Ilechukwu: Rangers and Zilimadjou Match Still Hanging in the Balance

Despite clinching a 1-0 victory in the initial encounter of their CAF Champions League first round preliminary showdown against Zilimadjou FC of Comoros, Enugu Rangers’ head coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, maintains that the game’s outcome remains uncertain as they gear up for the decisive second leg clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo today, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

In the first leg match held at the same venue, Uwumiro Frank netted a goal in the 22nd minute, securing the win for the Nigerian side.

Both teams resorted to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo for their CAF Champions League fixtures after their home grounds failed to meet CAF standards.

Zilimadjou FC played as the hosts in the first leg, and Ilechukwu emphasizes the need for the Flying Antelopes to step up their game to ensure advancement to the next round in their upcoming encounter.

“We did not let our guard down to settle the score in the first leg because the game’s equilibrium remains; it’s still a level playing field. Therefore, we are eager to give our all to secure progression,” Ilechukwu conveyed to PUNCH Sports Extra.

“It was surprising how they adapted to the field, and we were fortunate to acclimate swiftly as well.”

Reflecting on their narrow 1-0 victory in the prior leg, the Enugu Rangers coach commended the strengths of their opponents.

“We had numerous opportunities that we failed to capitalize on, and we are diligently striving to elevate our performance in the return leg. Our rivals became more aggressive in the second half after noticing our struggles to convert chances in the first leg. They possess commendable qualities, physical prowess, and speed among their players.”

Nonetheless, heading into today’s game, the Flying Antelopes stand as favorites, and a draw will suffice to secure their progression to the subsequent round of the competition.
