FG threatens to take action against striking doctors who fail to resume work today as negotiation meeting ends in a deadlock

The latest update on the ongoing strike by resident doctors reveals that the Federal government is threatening to take action against any doctor who fails to resume work today. The negotiation meeting between the government and the doctors ended in a deadlock, further escalating the situation.

The National Association of Resident Doctors commenced a nationwide strike on June 15, citing various grievances including the payment of their COVID-19 inducement allowances. Despite efforts to find a resolution, a meeting convened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, with the leadership of the resident doctors, failed to yield positive results.

The doctors expressed their unwillingness to return to the negotiation table unless the government presents tangible solutions within 24 hours. In response to this stance, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, expressed shock and disappointment, emphasizing the critical nature of their work, especially during a pandemic.

The Minister announced the decision to open a register in all hospitals to record the attendance of doctors, indicating a potential crackdown on those who continue the strike. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the health of citizens and hinted at potential actions to be taken against those who do not resume work.

The situation remains tense as both parties stand firm in their positions, with no immediate resolution in sight.
