FG has guaranteed absolute media freedom- Minister



The Federal Government has affirmed its commitment to upholding absolute media freedom for practitioners, emphasizing the importance of truthfulness and responsibility in their work.

Speaking at the 21st annual Daily Trust Dialogue with the theme “Tinubu’s Economic Reforms: Gainers and Losers” organized by the Media Trust Group, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the government’s stance on press freedom.

Idris commended the role of the Media Trust, noting their responsibility and significant contributions to the nation. He also lauded President Bola Tinubu for supporting press freedom and emphasized the need for responsible and honest reporting.

Addressing misconceptions about Nigeria’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, the minister clarified that the country had condemned the situation during an international conference and reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving it.

Regarding the N35,000 palliative measures following the fuel subsidy removal, Idris explained the resolution reached through discussions with labor unions.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Media Trust Group, Malam Kabiru Yusuf, stressed the importance of addressing Nigeria’s challenges and fostering hope for the nation’s future.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors expressed concerns about attempts to undermine media freedom and criminalize journalism by members of the National Assembly working in collaboration with the executive arm of government.
