FG Distributes Tomato Seeds to 500 Edo Farmers

Over 500 smallholder farmers in Edo State have received tomato seeds from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to enhance tomato production in the nation.

Samuel Owoicho, the Edo State Director of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, handed out the seeds to members of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria in Benin. He mentioned that the aim was to address the high cost of tomatoes in the state.

Encouraging farmers to grow tomatoes in their own spaces for self-sustainability, Owoicho emphasized that the initiative aimed to make Edo State self-reliant in tomato production and drive down market prices.

“Empowering farmers and ensuring a sustainable future is a priority for the Federal Government.

“Farmers have undergone training on optimal tomato cultivation techniques to help them achieve maximum yield and quality.

“Tomatoes not only play a vital role in our diets but also significantly support the livelihoods of numerous farmers nationwide.

“Recognizing the importance of tomato farming, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is actively engaged in providing support and promoting growth in this sector,” he stated.

The director emphasized the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that tomato farmers have access to premium seeds and agricultural inputs.

“In collaboration with research institutions and seed companies, we have developed and distributed improved seed varieties that are resilient to pests and diseases, have higher yields, and are well-suited to our climate.

“Furthermore, we are streamlining access to fertilizers, pesticides, and other essential inputs at subsidized rates to ease the financial burden on our farmers,” he declared.

Bako Dogwo, the AFAN state Chairman, praised the Federal Government for the empowerment initiative, stating that the distributed seeds would enhance tomato cultivation both in the state and the nation.
