Festus Keyamo cannot strain NASS' cordial relationship with Buhari – Senate President, Ahmad Lawan

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, in response to the clash between Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Employment and Productivity, and the National Assembly Joint Committee overseeing the Ministry’s planned recruitment of 774,000 Nigerians for the Special Public Works program of the Federal Government, maintained on Monday July 6 that the recruitment program will remain suspended. Lawan also emphasized that Keyamo cannot strain the cordial relationship between President Muhammadu Buhari and the 9th National Assembly. Lawan reiterated that only President Buhari defines the executive and not any of his employees. He further disclosed that the recruitment exercise will remain suspended until they have gathered all the necessary information about the selection process. Lawan stated, “Let me go to the first question that it appears we are not on the same page with the executive arm of government. Only one person defines the executive arm of government. Any other person there is recruited or appointed to support that one person. That one person is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So if somebody, an employee or an appointee, out of several does something that does not show harmony, it will be unfair and uncharitable to say that the executive arm of government is not on the same page with us.” He further explained that the National Assembly resolved to suspend the program until the executive arm provides explanations on how it will be implemented across the states. The National Assembly insisted that only the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) will implement the program, with the Minister of Employment and Productivity needing to explain to the National Assembly Committees on the program’s implementation. Lawan stressed the need for a complete understanding of how the program will be executed, emphasizing that it is in the national interest for the lawmakers to know the details.
