Exciting Day as Rangers FC and Celebrities Pay Tribute to Mr Ibu with a Special Match

Today (Tuesday), Rangers International Football Club, along with celebrities, distinguished personalities, and fans, will come together to honor the late Nollywood legend, John Okafor, fondly known as Mr Ibu, through a novelty match celebrating his remarkable comedy legacy.

In the midst of their recent triumph in becoming the champions of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League, Rangers FC is set to take part in this highly anticipated event, which forms a part of the late actor’s funeral arrangements.

A statement released to PUNCH Online on Tuesday by the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for Mr Ibu’s burial, Monday Ani, announced the novelty match as a gesture of respect towards Mr Ibu. Rangers, being the official club of the Enugu State Government, signifies the government’s appreciation for the late icon.

Part of the statement reads, “The Novelty Match is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, 25th of June at the Cathedral of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. The start time for the match is 4 pm sharp. Fans, sports enthusiasts, and well-wishers are encouraged to join in this historic occasion.”

Mr Ani expressed his appreciation to the General Manager of Rangers FC, Amobi Ezeaku, and the Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremmadu, for their invaluable support to make the event possible.

He also acknowledged the ongoing donations for the funeral service, expressing gratitude to all those contributing to honor the late Mr. Ibu, even in his passing.

Additionally, he gave special recognition to the Best Family for generously donating a live cow for the event, expressing hopes for a multiplied return for their support towards the success of the occasion.

Mr Ibu passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, following health challenges that necessitated financial assistance, including the amputation of one of his legs in November 2023 to save his life due to a severe infection in his ankle arteries that went undetected.
