European Union Grants Candidate Status to Ukraine and Moldova

The European Union’s decision to grant candidate status to Ukraine marks a significant milestone in the country’s pursuit of EU membership, providing a much-needed boost as it recovers from the impact of conflict and war.

“This is a crucial step on your path towards the EU,” remarked European Council President Charles Michel on Twitter following discussions in Brussels. The leaders also gave their approval for Moldova’s candidacy.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky applauded the European Council’s decision, describing it as “a unique and historical moment in EU/Ukraine relations.”

The EU Council summit’s decision comes shortly after President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Leyen expressed the executive body’s opinion that Ukraine has demonstrated a clear commitment to European values and standards, warranting candidate status.

However, Ukraine’s formal accession to the EU is expected to be a lengthy process, requiring consensus from all 27 member states at every stage.

Notably, Ukraine submitted its application soon after the Russian invasion in February, and the assessment process proceeded with unprecedented speed.

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv and a former boxer, paid tribute to his fellow citizens who are resisting the invasion, acknowledging the high price paid for this opportunity.

“We paid a very high price for this chance,” he communicated on Telegram. “Yes, we still have a lot to do on the way to the European family. But I am sure that Ukraine will do everything necessary, fulfil all the conditions and pass the necessary laws. Because otherwise our state has no future. Indeed, our best defenders are dying for it.”
